All students admitted to the PhD program are offered financial support in the form of a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA), except in rare cases where students have already secured funding from other sources. We encourage all US students who are eligible for either GEM or NSF support to apply to those programs, and we are happy to assist with that process.
The CBE department does not offer financial support for students admitted to the MS program. In some cases, MS students can secure funding in the form of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) from other programs at the university.

Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA)
Provides a monthly stipend, tuition waiver, fee waiver, and health insurance. Responsibilities include assisting a faculty member with research tasks.
Fellowships
The department and university each provide a number of fellowships for new graduate students. All students admitted to the PhD program are considered for these automatically.
National GEM Consortium
UT is a proud member of the National GEM Consortium, which works to increase the participation of underrepresented groups at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science. GEM develops funding to award fellowships and builds mentor networks to support fellows in achieving academic and professional success.
NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)
Each GRFP fellowship provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period. The Graduate Research Fellowship Operations Center is responsible for processing applications and responding to requests for information. General inquiries regarding the Graduate Research Fellowship Program should be made to Graduate Research Fellowship Operations Center, telephone: 866-NSF-GRFP, 866-673-4737 (toll-free from the US and Canada) or 202-331-3542 (international). email: info@nsfgrfp.org
Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA)
Provides a monthly stipend, tuition waiver, fee waiver, and health insurance. Responsibilities include assisting a faculty member with course-related tasks such as grading, assisting students, and leading labs. GTA positions are often available through the Engineering Fundamentals program and are a good option for students who wish to pursue an MS degree.
